Day 8 Happy Anniversary: Massage, memories and music

Well the day started with the knowledge that we were having our last day here in Ubud and the celebration of our 10th wedding anniversary- one tinged with sadness, the other with happiness.
Breakfast on our balcony provided the intimacy and privacy we wanted on this special day- not that we have made it to the restaurant here in Ubud once! Somehow breakfast in pyjamas overlooking the rice fields is far more appealing. Having opened our lovely cards (thank you to everyone for the good wishes) and exchanged gifts, we started to relive the memories of ten years ago to the day. It was nice to start receiving facebook messages from so many people once we had added our own messages on there- especially from those who attended the wedding yet we don't see very often. It was funny that so many people expressed their disbelief in it being ten years ago!! That's how we feel- it seems like only yesterday.

So a relax by the pool- private I might add as today no one was there so we enjoyed having the pool to ourselves and we were able to enjoy and talk about our happy memories.
We had booked a massage for two in the spa so headed there to be pampered for an hour.  As many of you know, I'm (Helen) not so keen on having a massage as I am so self-conscious so what should have been a lovely experience was little nerve wracking and somewhat uncomfortable. In fact, I couldn't help thinking all the way through that the two tiny Balinese girls were laughing at us and I spent much of the time wondering whether all bodies made the same sound when they were being massaged or just our overweight ones! Surprisingly an hour passed quite fast but once finished, I'd already made up my mind that the next treatment I had would be for my head, my  feet or a beauty treatment!! No more exposing of my body!

The next few hours were spent doing very little as Chris had arranged my surprise evening which included a car arriving at 5.30pm. Once ready we headed through the early evening traffic towards our unknown destination. Tonight the traffic seemed much quieter until we reached the local secondary school where the students had just been let out.  Dressed in smart brown shorts and beige shirts they were being collected by parents on mopeds which made hometime at Kaye's look quiet!!

As we arrived at our destination we were greeted by security before our car was allowed in- nothing unusual until our car was then screened for bombs!! Hmmmmm- that was another first! Chris had selected a beautiful setting for our evening meal- a lovely restaurant in a hotel with stunning views and a sunset (the reason why we had to leave so early!). A bride and groom were having their photographs taken and I saw a private table set for two with flowers, rose petals and candles in the middle of a pond overlooking the valley and I couldn't help but think how lucky they were.

As our table wasn't ready we were taken to the bar and given a cocktail (not the best flavour for me but Chris managed the two quite well!).

After a short while we were told our table was ready. By this time the private table for two had a canopy over it, shutters down so the other guests couldn't see it from the lobby and a pianist playing nearby. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the table wasn't for the newlyweds but for an old married couple of ten years! Yes - Chris had managed to organise my most wished for date - a private dinner for two (with no other tables) and a pianist playing just for us. WOW! With our own private waiter, amazing views and a menu of seven courses ahead of us, I realised that I was probably one of the luckiest girls on earth. However he had managed to arrange this with a pianist (not easy to find in Bali), I'll never know.
So the food was good, the music was great, the Balinese fizz and wine lovely and the company the best. I had the most wonderful evening and have only my wonderful hubby to thank for it. Happy anniversary to us is what I say and here is to the next ten years!
And tomorrow.....we move again!!!
